Golan had been preparing for this day for months, but the outbreak of the First Lebanon War led to the cancellation of his bar mitzvah celebration.
Tafsan HaKochavim is an Israeli coming-of-age novel in which Golan recounts his journey to adulthood under the shadow of a war that shatters his family, his dreams, and ultimately his very sense of self.
From the depths of despair, through intimate bonds formed between unconventional characters in unexpected places, to the triumph of youthful love’s innocence, the author takes readers on a painful yet humorous and optimistic inner journey—one that reveals the surprising resilience of the human spirit.
Tafsan HaKochavim, Gilad Barkan’s debut novel, is not just a personal story. It’s a universal soundtrack of an entire generation—those who came of age in war-weary Israel of the 1980s, trying to navigate its upheavals and carve out their future within it.
Gilad Barkan, born in 1970, is a graduate of the Weizmann Institute in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. He teaches computers how to think and writes for pleasure. He believes in science and in people, and studies and practices Zen Buddhism in pursuit of becoming a better human being.
