The sweater is knitted in the style of hand-knitted sweaters originating from the Aran Islands off the western coast of Ireland, traditionally worn by fishermen. These sweaters are typically off-white in color with patterns resembling ropes. The various designs on the sweater each hold different meanings, and each fisherman had a sweater with a unique pattern that served as his personal identifier.
